Houston's is a nice restaurant located in Metairie, which is basically a very immediate suburb of downtown New Orleans (5-10 minutes away). There used to be two locations here, with another Houston's on St. Charles in the Uptown area, but that one has closed down since Hurricane Katrina and from what I hear will not be reopening.
Houston's is a general American food restaurant, with the sort of menu you'd expect from that - steaks, burgers, ribs, and other random foods thrown in for good measure. They have both a bar and a sit-down area. The bar is first-come, first serve for whoever can get to a seat around it - you can order food there as well. The only problem with that is people are hovering around the seats like vultures with no real order to things. We eventually got seats there, but you had to be paying pretty close attention to get in. It's probably faster than waiting for a regular table to open up, but not by that much. We went on a Saturday and the line was huge, with a bunch of people waiting outside.
As far as what's good there, I recommend the spinach-artichoke dip for an appetizer - it tastes great and comes with tortilla chips, and they'll give you plates for everyone who wants some. The burgers are very good, but I haven't had anything else there. They had a pretty good selection of steaks, and most of the stuff ran in the $12-20 price range. The service was decent, and the only big problem I had with it was that the drinks were extremely expensive for what you got. I had two screwdrivers, both served in giant cups, which maybe had a shot of alcohol in each - $8 a pop. That's some pretty expensive orange juice.
The address of Houston's in New Orleans is:
4241 Veteran's Memorial Blvd.
Metairie, LA 70006
Phone: 504-889-2301
This is very easy to get to because Veteran's is a pretty prominent road. If you're coming from downtown New Orleans, get on I-10 going West, and take the Veteran's exit and take a right. Houston's is just past the Clearview Shopping Center and will be on your left. You may have to do a U-turn to get there but there are a lot of places to do that on Veteran's.
It's part of a very small national chain, and you can go see their website here. However, it really only has information on the company that owns it, and very little at all on the restaurant itself.
