Mothers is one of the best places I've been to eat since I got here, bar none. It is all traditional Southern food, and they've got a couple of great dishes that I like a lot. Personally, my favorites are the Red Beans and Rice (you get a meat, sausage is great with it, and two sides), the Early Bird Special (a great breakfast plate), and the omelets. They've also got fried chicken and some other stuff, but I haven't gotten through the whole menu yet. If you want a good Po'Boy, they're known for those too. It's in about the $8-12 price range. The atmosphere is very casual, sort of like a little diner.
Image of the outside of Mother's.
Mother's has apparently been around for quite awhile, at least judging by the pictures on the walls - lots of celebrities who've signed pictures dating back to it looks like the 50's or 60's. It's had several sets of owners, and has become a fixture of downtown New Orleans.
This door looks like the entrance, but you can't get in that way.
The "side entrance" to Mothers on Poydras where you actually go in.
Interior of Mother's. This is at noon, Saturday, and is relatively light as far as crowding.
Junk on the walls. They've got a lot of interesting stuff picked up over the years.
One tip: go there at around noon or a little earlier. If you try to get in after one, it is going to be a LONG wait. It's a great place to eat, but the problem is that everyone knows that. On Saturday afternoons, you could be there for half an hour just standing in line. Another thing to keep in mind is they've got a bigger room with seating in the back, and it's usually less crowded than the front. The only problem is some of the seats are right under the air conditioner back there, so watch out for that.
What you face at 1:00 or later - the line snaking out the door.
How do I get to Mother's?
The address is:
401 Poydras St.
New Orleans, LA 70130
You should be able to get there walking around - there's a little parking area that they have, but the last time I went up there it had several FEMA trailers in it and didn't have many spaces open. It's at the intersection of Poydras and Tchoupitoulas - it's pretty close to the Riverwalk. If you have a hotel downtown it will probably be within walking distance.
Do they have a website?
Yes. You can go to the Mother's website here - they have an online menu here. You will probably have time to pick something beforehand, though - they have a menu box at the door, and it will be at least 5 minutes while you cycle through the line.
