A snowball is basically just a snow cone - but when you say that to a New Orleans native, they get really defensive about it and start explaining to you all about the history and the difference in shaving granularity of the ice which makes them much better than anything you could possibly find elsewhere. They're also often served with toppings like you would put on ice cream.
Regardless of the merits of that debate, New Orleans definitely has more snowball stands per capita than any other place I've been. Many of them are famous and have become tourist attractions in their own right. They're usually seasonal and only open if you go there between late spring and early fall, and technically they're actual buildings and not usually a "stand.". I'm trying to go around to the more famous ones and will post pictures and info as I go through them:
