Southern Candymakers in New Orleans
Southern Candymakers is a candy store located in the French Market area of the French Quarter in New Orleans. It's one of the best candy stores in the city, and they've won awards for their creamy pralines. They've got two different stores, each at an opposite end of the French Market. I went to the one closer to the downtown area.
They give you free samples, and I can confirm that the candy is very good. If you're looking for a gift for somebody this stuff would be great for it. It's a little expensive - most of the stuff was in the range of $15 to $20 a pound, but it is very high quality and to be honest, you don't go to a candy store to get a fifty cent Hershey bar.
They also have some New Orleans touches to some of the candies - they sell a chocolate gator and several Southern themed candies.
All in all, my biggest worry would be the heat. Go here LAST if you're walking through the French Quarter, because your stuff will melt. The location I went to at least was within a few blocks of several of the major hotels, and since they're both on the end of the shopping areas it's convenient to make it the final stop anyway.
The sign out side claims to be the best at pralines.
The Southern Candymakers sign, repeating the boast.
Racks upon racks of chocolate.
A candy machine - you can see them making the candy as you eat it.

They have a web site here and you can even order candy online there. BUT - make sure that you get a cold shipping option if you're getting chocolate, because it will melt in the summer heat.
